JH Engineering, LLC (JHE) was entrusted with the Commissioning and Startup Services for the Mohawk Valley School District's Domestic Water, Fire Protection, and Irrigation Systems Improvements Project. This greenfield water treatment plant (WTP) has a modest capacity of only 25 gallons per minute (gpm), making it the smallest WTP JHE has encountered to date. Although this is a small system, it carries the same complexities as larger water treatment plants. The raw water, sourced from local irrigation canals used by neighboring farming communities, has varying water quality throughout the year. Flowing directly from the canal into the wet wells, the raw water enters the WTP and is pumped to the rapid mixer and flocculation mixer, where aluminum sulfate is added. Subsequently, the water passes through the super settler, where solids are collected before the water proceeds to the packaged Altapac ultrafiltration system, where further processing, filtration, and chlorination takes place. Once the water meets potable standards, it is transported to the distribution tanks to serve the local school and neighboring residences in the lettuce capital of the world.

JHE played a vital role in developing test packages and executing functional and performance testing to commission the WTP and the new irrigation and fire systems. Spearheaded by Jeff Haasch PE, Nicole Wigtil, and Elena Ball, JHE's dedicated team conducted the testing procedures with precision and expertise, overseeing and completing successful system disinfection leading to regulatory approval before distribution. Post-startup, JHE remains committed to the project, stepping in as the Engineer of Record for phase 2 design efforts.
